again. the president in washington and another deadline. secretary geithner warns we will hit the debt ceiling even before we tumble over the fiscal cliff. good morning from washington. it is thursday, december 27th. this is "the daily rundown." i'm luke russert. two days after christmas and washington is back to work trying to harsh out a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. the senate will get back from the session after holiday break. the president is expected to arrive back to the white house without his family to get back to twork mework to meet the loo deadline. mike is at the white house. let's start with you. the consensus around the hill is that we are more likely than not to go over the fiscal cliff, but there is a small chance harry reid could take a house pass bill and amend it and send it back over to the house. what are you hear being that? >> conceivably, but when the president lights upon the south lawn and the marine one later this morning, it's unclear why he is coming back and who will be here with him. as you mentioned, speaker boehner remains in ohio where he is from. h

that rain lift up. washington improving conditions. new york city very heavy rain and very gusty winds. that is part of the problem with this storm and has been since the beginning. we are seeing the swaths of snow but the winds are so strong. in the last three hours 40 mile per hour wind gusts in new york city. 26 in buffalo and cleveland and indy. so again, the snow clearing out of illinois and indiana but look at what it has left behind. in areas of illinois, 18 inches. in indy, 7 inches, kentucky, 4 inches. and here's what's left of it. the whole storm lifting to the north. upstate and western new york getting 5 to 9 inches of snow. nine to 12 inches in northern new york and the green and white mountains of new hampshire. >> and of course all anybody wants to know is when can we expect to see the weather improve around the country? >> it will. it is going to improve. we are going to watch this move. here is the area of low pressure we are watching. here's the time stamp tonight at 10:00. right on the money. here is where that low pressure is right over washington where is it an but

have big news out of washington, where nothing is happening. the house is not in session, and as of this moment has no plans to be in session for the end of the year. nothing is stirring, not even harry reid. yes, i'm still in the christmas spirit. the president meanwhile is in hawaii and won't be returning until tomorrow. now, normally nothing happening would not be big news in washington. nothing happening is kind of the status quo in washington. getting nothing done is to our political system as saying great is to tony the tiger. it's just kind of what we do now. right now, this week, nothing happening is huge news. the reason is that usually when washington doesn't do anything nothing happens. you do nothing, nothing happens. that's how it goes. in fact that's why people call it doing nothing. after you do it, nothing occurs. if washington doesn't do something, a lot happens. all the bush tax cuts expire, the payroll tax cuts expire. doctors participating in medicare, see their reimbursements cut by more than 25%. good luck getting a doctor then. more than a trillion

is already priced in. okay. welcome to "worldwide exchange." plenty of news to watch out of washington. all of this week, we thought it would be a quiet one. but i won't be inside the beltway if they want to get something done. the u.s. will hit the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling come monday. in a letter to congressional leaders, geithner says treasury will begin taking steps to save the government about $2 billion. geithner says it's harder to predict a time frame because the ongone fiscal cliff talks make it difficult to forecast next year's budget. among the measures treasury will take including suspending state and local government securities and investments in the federal employee pension funds. those don't sound like good practices going forward. president obama meanwhile arrives back in washington after cutting short his christmas vacation in hawaii. congress is back in town, but little progress was made over the holiday to avoid the fiscal cliff and no talks have been set. the senate is due in session today, but the house has no plans to reconvene. last week, house speaker john boehner
